Drink drive passenger jailed for causing death by dangerous driving

Millionaire businessman, John Nichols, has been jailed for 4 years having been charged with causing death by dangerous driving despite not being the driver of the vehicle.

Nichols allowed his girlfriend, Mary Butres, to drive his Jaguar XJ8 after consuming wine during a day out at the races.

Butres lost control of the Jaguar on the A1 at Great Ponton, Lincolnshire travelling at 113mph in torrential rain.

The vehicle ploughed into a Ford Fiesta before hitting Mark Crompton and Jodie Brown killing them instantly.

Butres was found to have a blood alcohol level almost 1 ½ times the legal limit at the time of the crash.

Judge John Milmo, QC said Nichols had been aware Butres was over the drink drive limit and was driving far too fast for the conditions.

Nichols was jailed for 4 years, banned from driving for 4 years and ordered to pay costs of £19,420.
